The Sarus Crane, from first contact to finished T-shirt, the inspiration behind Disorder's new artwork.

I first got the idea for a drawing, The Circle of Life, from a chance meeting with a Sarus Crane.  It was During a ten hour drive from Yangon to the coast, in the Delta region of Myanmar, that we first came across the majestic Sarus Crane. The worlds tallest bird, at 1.8 meters tall it looked down on the villagers that had casual come out to greet it.

 Jaded by the long exhausting journey, punch drunk by the monsoon battered road, it was a truly mystical awe-inspiring experience. A brief encounter, but one that would be etched into my memory. At seeing this enigmatic bird, a throw back to the age of the dinosaurs with a human like gaze,  I instinctively understood why the bird is so revered.  Throughout much of the sub continent and the far east it has achieved mythical if not devine status. The crane is a symbol of happiness and eternal youth. In Japan, the crane is one of their most mystical or holy creatures, others include the dragon and the tortoise. It symbolizes good fortune and longevity, due to its fabled life span of a thousand years.

The Circle of Life drawing took a few months to complete and the finished image developed organically as I was drawing it. The process was painstaking and became very therapeutic, a contemplative mantra. I knew it was essential to get the balance right, between the energetic movement of the birds, and instill a Zen like, contemplation in the drawing. I thoroughly enjoyed the process and hope you enjoy the end result, Disorder's new Circle of Life t-shirt. Now, I think it is about time for it to take flight and meet the world.
