Disorder: Art Meets Fashion

We are all about the Art here at Disorder Boutique, Art Meets Fashion of all descriptions and disciplines, quite literally on all the walls. For many years the artwork and oil paintings of Mark Howard, one of the founders and designers at Disorder, have been displayed around the walls of this eclectic store and features on the casual wear sold there.

As one Disorder customer once said, “Disorder is about art, just as much as it is about fashion…” We love to create an understated, a simply ‘good looking piece of design’ that has subtly broken every rule in the book ‘look.’ Another customer said that the only way he can describe disorder the brand is that it has a ‘post-modernist,’ feel if there was such a thing… Disorder have an underground cult following, although most of our business is through word of mouth and our customers live all over the world, once people discovers us, they prefer to keep us a secret.

The brand Disorder is totally unique, it does not pretend to be something it isn’t and its originality disarms people when they first see it. Once a person discovers the tailored fit, they get hooked on its Italian influenced designer cuts, with a British oriental twist. Our designs are influenced by a strong sense of a need to give justice to our customers with a look and feel that makes them reflect their personality. The brand does not ‘hijack’ the customer, as does so many other labels with their shouting branding, our designs instead, we like to think, become part of the character of the individual. Each design literally starts from an idea, we do not follow fashion, nor do collections as such, or seasons, we just design what we feel like and run it until it runs its own natural course. We are renown for our range of shirts and jackets, trousers and t-shirts with graphic art from co-owner Mark Howard’s own sketches and illustrative artwork.

In recent months this ‘Underground Art Gallery’ experience has gone to the next level, with more and more regular customers commissioning Artwork from Disorder that you can wear and put on your walls. Most Popular commissions have been Icons of the modern age, such as Jimi Hendrix, Prince, David Bowie, Muhammad Ali to name a few.

The Artwear Range features garments made from made from sustainably and ethically sourced cotton,  bamboo, viscose and then printed using non toxic inks with Disorders most popular paintings.  Some of the paintings you can see hanging in the store. They have been the surprise hit this summer, with Instagram ‘Likes’ doubling for photoshoots of them. The versatility of the reversible coats in particular make them perfect for the unpredictable British weather. The colour pallet of the 3 in 1 Halterneck Dresses and the scarfs, enable a mix and match for any  item in your wardrobe and the size/shape makes them so versatile for wearing as a sarong, halter top or head wrap.

The Artwear Range by Disorder has been hugely popular, but due to the bespoke nature of Disorders production, still exclusive. The Temple Guardian Halterneck Dress by Disorder featured above is a slow fashion dress that can be worn in 4 distinctly different ways. The Disorder 4 in 1 dress style is very versatile garment, depending on how you wrap the straps, you can change the style.  From a loose fitting dress, to a strap dress, to a figure hugging halter neck dress and even into a skirt. The print on the Halterneck Dress is taken from one of our original paintings Temple Guardian.  The painting  was inspired by our cultural travels to Asia. In particular a trip to Yangon, Myanmar. The fabric is a durable, lightweight and machine washable jersey. The dress is designed and handmade in our UK micro factory. Sustainable and ethical, this dress is a one off piece made to order, thus helps to reduce clothing waste.

Disorder is a slow fashion brand. This means we don’t compromise our design principles and environmental ideals, when we make our clothing. We are ideologically opposed to fast fashion and its disposable attitude towards clothing. It is important to value the clothing we design and make. We design and make our clothing to last. Disorder doesn’t design clothing to be thrown away. We design and make our clothing to be worn and loved, over and over again.
